SANADA TEN BRAVES (Live Action Film)

I am very excited about this film.  I was fortunate enough to see the popular stage production component of this project in 2014 while I was living in Japan, and I am pleased to see that both director Tsutsumi Yukihiko and lead actors Nakamura Kankurou and Matsuzaka Tori will be returning to continue their roles for this film adaptation.  I have loosely translated and subtitled the video which features some behind the scenes shots, short interviews, and the trailer for the film.

Himitsu ~Top Secret~ (Live-Action Film)

Scheduled to come out in early August, although I’m not too familiar with the original manga/anime I’m looking forward to this film.

Ikuta Toma and Rurouni Kenshin film series director Otomo Keishi have come together, along with Okada Masaki, Matsuzaka Tori, and other distinguished cast members including Kikkawa Kouji, to produce the live-action adaptation of Himitsu ~Top Secret~ (also known in English as (The Top Secret: Murder in Mind).

Higanjima Deluxe (Live-Action Film)

I watched the serial TV drama series Higanjima during my stint in Japan 3 years ago, so I was pretty surprised to see that a continuation film is set for release October 15, complete with Shiraishi Shunya, Suzuki Ryohei, and others reprising their roles (along with some new faces).

First Thoughts

I’m a fan of Miike Takashi.  Let me just put that out there first.  I know many people, including Japanese associates, who cannot abide by his work, but I am indeed a fan.  I am also an obsessed avid fan of samurai films, to the extent that I studied and conducted an independent study project on the genre in college.  As a result, this movie was perhaps more up my alley from the get-go than other viewers.  I will, however, try my best to be objective all things considered.  So here goes.

13 Assassins is a remake of an older film (directed by Kudo Eiichi in 1963), which was in turn made in response to the original release of the Seven Samurai film.  It is also supposedly based (very loosely) on actual events.

13-assassins--2

I watched 13 Assassins for the first time at the New York Asian Film Festival 2011, where we not only got to hear actor Yamada Takayuki speak, but we also got to see the original Japanese cut of the film.

When the film was released internationally, 15 minutes were omitted, so we got to see the movie as director Miike Takashi intended (I will get to what was different between the two cuts later).
